Re: Favorite GTA?
I hate it when kids get to play adult games and come into GPP and talk about it.
My first GTA was number 2, a rental on the Dreamcast. I didn't like it at first because I got lost so easily and didn't know where anything was (no fucking ingame map? Are you kidding me??), and I couldn't figure out how to save (okay, that's my own fault, though I eventually figured out the church, but I still hated it due to reason #1)...
But that night I started playing it, and I didn't stop. I began to get used to the controls, and I really got into the story and started enjoying the missions. I even started memorizing where everything was, though it was still occasionally a hassle.
I went through two of the towns. I also remember the elvis impersonators, I would laugh at their remarks and then shoot the bastards, which was funny. I enjoyed paying attention to which gang I was rolling with, and the radio was a gas as well. I really began to enjoy it.
But, I still couldn't save it because I had a hard time finding the damn safe house The next day I returned it. I bought again for pennies a year or two ago but I couldn't get into it.
But GTA2 isn't my choice. Anybody who's been around long enough probably already knows my choice: Vice-fucking-City. To me that game was and still is cream of the crop. GTA3 to me was too bland, the aiming a bit too shitty and still no fucking map. They really didn't help those of us with a poor sense of direction out, did they? Then theres San Andreas. I liked it alot more than 3, and I have beaten the story mode and spent countless hours getting into it, but to be honest it just wasn't as memorable as VC. And, it still had some flaws that irked me quite a bit; it was waaaay too big and thusly far too easy to get lost, even with the map. The other issue is it's hard to memorize where to go anywhere with that much real-estate. And it still had really poor AI, which now did highway driving and was nothing more than infuriating. The story wasn't as interesting and the design of the cities weren't quite as good as VC, either.
Vice City then. Thing is, I say GTA2 was my first, but really it was Vice City that was the first I really got into and loved. I admit after SA came out I stopped playing it much but nowadays when I think of all my favorite GTA moments, 90% of them are from VC. The aiming was slightly better than GTA3, it had a proper map which allowed me to figure out where I was going, the City was more than big enough and charming in its design, it had motorbikes and lots of sweet weapons and a good story with memorable charactors, and some great missions in there as well. The music, the lovely 80s vibe (I like that kind of thing), the hilarious radio conversations, and all the extras and secrets and and and. And because it wasn't so massive, it wasn't overly complicated, which is what brought San Andreas down for me I think. I like a little extra room around the city, but SA was too much.
Starting your own little missions was great too. Unlocking the Tank, for example.. that requires you to break into the military base. There were lots of ways to do it, you could run in guns blazing with full armour and the like, or you could put on a cop uniform and waltz in. But my favorite way of grabbing the tank was much more dramatic: I'd grab the helicopter off the mansion, fly right over, then just drop the fuck in right beside it. I usually jumped out just before it hit the ground, letting the copter fly it's own way until it crashed and burned. By then I was getting shot at, but it was too late: I hopped in the tank and rolled on out. I did this several times, hiding multiple tanks in my garages across town. It was badass.
It was stuff like this that made me love VC so much. I can't wait to get home and play it again, actually

Re: Favorite GTA?
The missions in 3 were much more challenging and fun than the other ones (was stuck on the mission where you had to blow up the coffee[?] stands with a rocket launcher for 3 months).
Vice City was much more fun and the story was very entertaining.
San Andreas, IMO, had a shitty storyline. I figured out virtually everything by the second city. Sure, the features were awesome, but those dreadful trees popping up out of nowhere while flying were driving me in-fucking-sane.
GTA2 was extremely fun. Even though I always played for the gameplay, and not for the story, I remember spending at least 4 hours everytime I loaded the game. Even though the game was simple, it was hella fun.
In short, Vice City. Storyline was amazing. Gameplay was awesome. I loved the characters. Music was also kickass. I'd pick these out of the others anyday. Hopefully IV will have the same charm this game had. Best one I've played.
Next comes GTA2. Then comes 3. SA is the worst IMO. And not because the character is a "gay ghetto nigger". I actually like the main character. But what I hated mostly about the game is how easy the missions were, and most of the characters. Pretty much everyone acted the same, or were just.. boring. I can't really explain it now.
I also never played the first or london.
VC > 2 > 3 > SA

Anyone who decries San Andreas for having a "thug nigger" and the accompanying themes. Seriously, get over it, it's true that it fits the style of the game perfectly...
But you're still an idiot. "gay grafics"??? Are you fucking 13 years old? And, saying GTA3 sucks is a pretty big call when San Andreas isn't much better. Honestly, just stfu.

Re: Favorite GTA?
San Andreas, because the game play is simply better. More of everything. I quite liked the almost-rpg aspect of it (like choosing clothes and getting more stamina/strength etc.) Someone in the depths of this thread said that the newer ones are too linear; I disagree with this. Perhaps the story line is more linear, but the massive 3D environments (esp. in San Andreas) allow for so much more fun besides the storyline.
Talking of story lines, I thought the Vice City one was the best (and Tommy V is easily the best playable character in the series IMO), but the the tiny size of the map made me basically stop playing it as soon as I had completed the storyline.
I like San Andreas because there are loads of nod-backs to others in the series (like Catalina meeting silent GTA3 guy (Fido?) and talking about going bank robbing together) or Jethro and Dwain saying they moved to SA because some mafia guy bought their boat yard!

Re: Favorite GTA?
I've played GTA 1, 2, 3, VC, and SA.
2, 3, and VC are my favs.
2 was the first one I played and it was quite addicting. I've never beaten it, but I've reinstalled it multiple times and gotten right back into it.
3 was just great. The map is small by todays standards, but if I booted that game up right now I would know the place like the back of my hand (which I know very well).
And to me VC has the perfect mix of it all. It expands on 3 in all the right places and doesn't go overboard with it.
I barely remember 1, and SA was just too much. Half of the additions seemed superfluous. The map was massive, which had its pros and cons. Don't get me wrong, I still liked it, but after I lost my savegame I got bored working my way back up to where I was.
