Just got a new dog, and need help diciplining the old one

First issue: I have an Alaskan Malamute cross Akita and it's reached a little bit over one year. We moved fromthe country (Small property, but very open, lots of wild life, great views of valleys, roads and the bush) to the suburbs. Now my dog has no way to see outside the property as it is all fenced off.

I used to just let it out and let it run it's self tired in the country, but now I've started taking it for proper walks.

So to the problem, it keeps digging holes on the fence line so it can look out, big ones, in the nice part of the garden. My mum smacks my dog, but I don't like that. My hand is there for tickles, scratches, and feeding, not to punish.

How do I make her stop digging?

Second problem: Some one dumped a nice pure bred collie on us. It's 3 months old. We were to look after it for "a day or two" and then they vanished never to pick up their dog again. It already has amazing protective qualities over children and babies....defending them against our other dog who is over excited by young'ns and can hurt them.

The question about the collie: My Akita is VERY jealous, it's a girl, the collie is a boy. I heard Akita/malamutes don't get along too well with other dogs, how ever males are an exception, is this true? Can they like each other or is it a lost cause? Also, is it possible that when we aren't home they will start to entertain each other, thus stopping the destructive behaviour of the akita?

She's a lot of hard work, but she's my babe, my girl, I love her! I'd really like to keep the collie too, it's so adorable and has a great temperment.

We feed our pets well and give them lots of attention. Answers greatly appreciated.

Regarding the digging, just put some of the dog's poop in the hole, then re-fill it.

As for the dogs getting along, are they getting along ok now? If they are, then you have no problem. With the collie being so young, your older dog will probably be the more dominant one, at least for a while, until the collie gets older and (possibly) challenges the other dog.

If they aren't getting along, try spending more time with your old dog. She's probably feeling left out, like the older sibling when its parents bring home a new baby. You could also try playing games with both of them at the same time to encourage them to play together.
