Black holes or Black bodies?

How do we know that a black hole is a "hole"?

It seems to me that an object, say a bunch of huge plants that all come together, could be so massive that light would be unable to escape it and therefore would just be a giant dark mass with a huge gravity field, exhibiting the same characteristics as a black hole.

If it is indeed a hole, then what is the point at which something becomes to massive that is rips a hole in the fabric of space?

Re: Black holes or Black bodies?

A black hole is a black body, as you've described. Since it seems to suck everything into itself and appears black as a hole, it just ended up with that name instead.

A black hole isn't really a hole.

Also, you may want to look up the term "dark star" as well.
